Puerto Banus is one of the great launchpads of the Mediterranean. From our base in the marina, the Costa del Sol opens in two directions — east towards Marbella and Málaga, west towards Estepona, Sotogrande and the Strait of Gibraltar — and after more than fifteen years chartering yachts from this exact berth, we have a clear view of which routes deliver which experiences. Some are made for sunset. Others are made for swimming. A few are genuine bucket-list days at sea. This is our insider guide to the best private boat routes from Puerto Banus, and how to choose the right one for your charter.
Why Puerto Banus is the best starting point on the Costa del Sol
Puerto Banus is one of the most iconic marinas in Europe, lined with superyachts, designer boutiques and a cosmopolitan atmosphere that sets the tone before you step onboard. Its location is genuinely strategic: the Marbella coastline begins within minutes east of the marina, and Estepona, Sotogrande and Gibraltar are all within reach of a full-day charter heading west. The waters off Puerto Banus are deep and sheltered from the moment you leave the breakwater, so the experience starts the second you cast off.
Route 1 — Marbella coastline cruise
The most-requested route from our marina. You head east, hugging the shoreline, passing the Nikki Beach and Ocean Club stretches, the Hotel Don Carlos beach and the iconic stretch of Marbella’s Golden Mile from the water. It is the route most of our guests choose for 2 to 4-hour charters and the perfect introduction to a private boat charter in Marbella.
Best for: short charters of 2 to 4 hours, first-timers, couples, sunset cruises, photoshoots and gentle swim stops in calm bays along the way.
Route 2 — Puerto Banus to Estepona
Heading west, the coast becomes quieter and the bays cleaner. Cruising towards Estepona takes you past San Pedro de Alcántara and Guadalmina, with several calm anchoring spots where the water turns turquoise on a still day. It is a route that opens up real swimming, paddle surf and a more relaxed pace than the busier Marbella shoreline.
Best for: half-day or longer charters, groups who want variety, swimming stops in calmer waters (subject to conditions), and travellers who enjoy seeing the western Costa del Sol from the sea.
Route 3 — Puerto Banus to Sotogrande
Sotogrande is one of the most exclusive enclaves on the Spanish coast, and reaching it by sea adds a completely different dimension to the day. The route follows the coast west past Estepona, with the Sierra Bermeja rising in the background and Gibraltar appearing on the horizon as you progress. It is a more ambitious itinerary and only really works on full-day charters.
Best for: full-day charters of 8 hours, premium and luxury travellers, groups who want to combine longer cruising with proper time at anchor, and anyone looking for a complete Mediterranean experience.
Route 4 — Puerto Banus to Gibraltar
For something genuinely iconic, head west to Gibraltar. As you cross into the Bay of Gibraltar, the Rock rises out of the sea ahead of you, with Morocco visible across the Strait on clearer days. It is one of the most memorable full-day charters we run, and we recommend it whenever guests want a true sense of adventure from a luxury yacht. If this is your plan, see our dedicated private Gibraltar boat tour page for more details.
Best for: full-day or extended charters, travellers wanting an iconic destination, premium groups looking for something different and weather-flexible bookings.
Route 5 — Dolphin watching from Marbella
The waters between Marbella and the Strait of Gibraltar are well known for marine life, and a private boat is one of the best ways to look for dolphins in a calm, exclusive setting. Our skippers know where pods have been spotted recently and which sea conditions favour sightings, although wildlife is never on a fixed schedule — we describe these trips as a dolphin watching experience rather than a guaranteed encounter. Learn more on our dolphin watching from Marbella page.
Best for: families with children, nature lovers, relaxed groups and charters of 3 to 4 hours minimum.

What can change your route on the day
Even with the perfect plan, the sea has the final word. The route on the day depends on the weather and sea conditions, the wind direction, the boat type and its cruising range, the duration you have booked, the preferences of your group and your skipper’s local knowledge. Our skippers will always adjust the plan to give you the best possible experience given the conditions — sometimes a slightly different route delivers a much better day than the one originally planned. That is exactly the kind of judgement a skippered private charter gives you.
